Native to East Asia, Hibiscus syriacus is a species of flowering plant, which is a vigorous, upright, case-shaped, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub. Its showy, 5-petaled flowers appear from early summer to autumn, comparatively long period. The flower comes in such colors as pink, purple and white, each flower having a prominent and showy center staminal column. Its common names include Rose of Sharon, shrub althea, rose mallow and St. Joseph’s rod.

The flowers can be single or double with several color forms such as pink, white and red, including a species which opens white in the morning and change to deep red in the evening.
