Located on Caswell beach, NC, The Oak Island Lighthouse was built in 1958. Its design is curious for a few reasons: the diameter is constant from bottom to top, rather than conical. The concrete is dyed three different colors, eliminating the need for annual repainting. And the interior steps are a series of ships' ladders, rather than a spiral. I expect the explanation for its Brutalist design, beyond economics, is the era in which it was created.

Between the Kniepsand in the west of Amrum and the dune landscape there are small sand hills covered with marram grass. These are the beginnings of a future dune. The marram grass catches the sand that is blown across the beach by the wind. It collects and gradually becomes a mound, later a dune. More and more marram grass settles on the small dune and so the dune grows in height over time. This picture shows it and the Amrum lighthouse in the background.

A lighthouse is a luminous signaling tower located on the sea coast or land, as a reference and coastal or aerial warning for sailors.
