This is probably the most important of Roman bridges at the world. In fact, its name Alcantara (Al Qantarat) means 'the bridge' in arab. That is enough to understand the value of this work. It was built between years 105 and 106 by Roman arquitect Caius Iulius Lacer on the Way that communicates Norba -today Caceres- with Conimbriga -today Condeixa-a-Velha-. Therefore it is not an access to a city.

The stone Alacantara Bridge is an two thousand years old roman bridge that crosses the Tagus River. Built by the Romans to connect an important trading road. It was built between years 105 and 106 by the Roman arquitect Caius Julius Lacer.

Ajuda, Elvas municipality, Portalegre district, Portugal: Ajuda Bridge is a historic structure that spanned the Guadiana River, connecting the Portuguese town of Elvas with Olivença, a town historically claimed by both Portugal and Spain, controlled by the latter since 1801. Built in 1509 during the reign of King Manuel I of Portugal, the bridge was designed to facilitate trade and military movement, a significant strategic and economic link. However, during the War of Spanish Succession in 1709, the bridge was partially destroyed by Spanish forces to hinder Portuguese troop movements. While it was never fully restored, the remains of the Ajuda Bridge still stand today, symbolizing both the historical conflict and the enduring cultural ties between Portugal and Spain.
