Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is named after John Pfeiffer, who lived in a cabin on the property beginning in 1884. He was the son of Michael Pfeiffer and Barbara Laquet. The Pfeiffer family immigrated from France and were among the first European settlers in the area. Many features in Big Sur are named for the descendants of the Pfeiffers.

Here in Schooner Gulch State Beach, I captured the mystical motion of the waves as they crashed against intricate clusters of barnacle-like life living on the coastal rocks. This shot specifically shows the interesting waterfall-like beauty of some of these rock formations. The marine terraces in the background bring absolute grandeur and magnitudes of scale to this image.

McWay Cove waterfall is one of two waterfalls that spills and ends in the Pacific ocean. It's not an easy picture to take, because you have to be there in the winter or early spring, and the recent precipitation has to be heavy enough to produce the waterfall like you see here. I went back a few years later for a better picture and the waterfall was a trickle. It is relatively not well known gem in California because of its remote location. You don't run into many tourists here in the late winter. The light is helpful here, producing a turquoise ocean. I took this in a vertical orientation because of the surrounding foliage. Unless one wants to cross the barrier and take an unobstructed photo from the cliff., a horizontal view is obstructed.
