ancient elephant sculpture at East Mebon temple
Bakong is the first temple mountain of sandstone constructed by rulers of the Khmer empire at Angkor near modern Siem Reap in Cambodia. In the final decades of the 9th century AD, it served as the official state temple of King Indravarman I in the ancient city of Hariharalaya, located in an area that today is called Roluos.
The South Gate of Angkor Thom is decorated with large stone elephant carvings flanking the gateway, symbolising royal power, strength, and protection. Elephants were closely associated with Khmer kingship and warfare, serving as mounts in battle and processions. Their placement at the gate reinforces the idea of Angkor Thom as a sacred, fortified city, with elephants acting as guardians alongside the naga balustrades.

Bayon Temple restoration has been ongoing since the 1960s, with major international efforts since the 1990s. Challenges include structural instability from towers built without proper foundations, sandstone erosion from tropical weather and vegetation growth, and damage from the Khmer Rouge era (1975-1979).
