Porcupine Close Up (Canada)
North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum), also known as Canadian Porcupine or Common Porcupine, is a large rodent in the New World porcupine family. This animal is usually found in coniferous and mixed forested areas in Canada, Alaska and much of the northern and western United States.

Porcupine in Wild Field
North American Porcupine , Juvenile
A young North American porcupine - Erethizon dorsatum - climbs a tree looking for food, and ultimately settles into gnawing on pine bark. Porcupines do not throw their quills, but the quills detach easily and the barbs make them very difficult to remove. When threatened they swing their tails at their attackers. Their downfall can be a cunning predator that maneuvers the animal onto its back, exposing its unprotected underside. Porcupines are nearsighted and slow-moving through forest tree. They have a natural antibiotic in their skin cells that prevents infection when they fall from a tree and self-inflict their own quills. This occurs fairly often because they prefer the tender shoots and end branches that don't support their weight well. Flagstaff, Arizona, 2013.

The North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is the second largest rodent in North America, after the North American Beaver (Castor canadensis). The porcupine is distinguished by its coat of about 30,000 quills that covers all of its body except underbelly, face and feet. The quills are sharp, barbed and hollow hairs that are used primarily for defense and insulation. When used for defense, the quills can lodge in the flesh of a victim and are difficult and painful to remove. The porcupine’s summer diet includes twigs, roots, stems, berries, and other vegetation. In the winter, they mainly eat conifer needles and tree bark. Porcupines are a slow-moving creature with poor distance vision. They are nocturnal, spending their days resting in trees. The porcupine does not hibernate in winter, preferring to stay close and sleep in their dens. This porcupine was photographed in the woods near Williams, Arizona, USA.

The North American Porcupine is second largest rodents in Alaska - first being the beaver. This photo was taken while wandering in a wooded area close to my neighborhood. As you can see, the quills are spiny and protrude from its fur- it is best to keep your distance.
