The main town is Kronstadt, a heavily fortified town built to protect the city of St Petersburg. It is still home to part of the Russian navy but many of the defences are in a state of decay. Fort Peter is joined to the island by a causeway. The domed building to the right is the Naval Cathedral of St Nicholas.
