A bold, opportunistic raptor, the crested caracara is often seen walking around on the ground looking for food. It mainly feeds on carcasses of dead animals, but steals food from other raptors, raids bird and reptile nests, and takes live prey if the possibility arises.

$It measures 38 to 44 centimeters in length.\nThe juvenile has a dark iris and plumage different from the adult, with brown tones and only outlined gray patches. The species' plumage changes according to its breeding season. Adults in breeding plumage will have a gray head, while adults in resting breeding plumage will have a light gray patch on the ear feathers. The adult is similar to the Lesser White-rumped Gull (Chroicocephalus maculipennis), distinguished mainly by its gray head instead of dark brown and by the yellow iris, which is dark in the adult (Chroicocephalus maculipennis).$
