The San Giovanni Fortress (St. John’s Fortress) is a medieval stronghold perched 260 meters above Kotor, Montenegro, forming the uppermost part of the city’s fortifications. Originally built during the Byzantine era and expanded by the Venetians in the 15th–17th centuries, the fortress was a key defensive structure guarding the Bay of Kotor. It is connected to the Old Town by a 1,350-step stone staircase that runs along the fortified city walls.
