Melanargia galathea has a wingspan of 46–56 millimetres In these medium-sized butterflies the upper side of the wings is decorated with white and gray-black or dark brown markings, but it is always gray-black or dark brown checkered in the basal and distal areas. The underside is similar to the upper side but the drawings is light gray or light brown. On the underside of the hindwings is present a row of gray eye spots. The males and the females are quite similar, except that some females may have a yellowish nuance on the underside of the wings.\nLife cycle:\nLike other members of its subfamily, the larvae feed on various grasses. These include Phleum (P. pratense), Poa (P. annua, P. trivalis), Festuca rubra, Bromus erectus, Dactylis, Brachypodium pinnatum, Agrostis capillaris, Elytrigia, Holcus, Dactylis, Triticum and Agropyron species . \nEggs are laid on the wing, or from brief perches on grass stems, and are just sprinkled among the grass stems. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately enter hibernation and only feed the following spring when the fresh growth occurs. They are a lime-green colour, with a dark green line running down the middle of their back. Pupation takes place at ground level in a loose cocoon. Adults can be found from early June to early September. On a good site, in warm, sunny weather, thousands can be seen gently fluttering amongst the grass heads.\nHabitat:\nIt is found in forest clearings and edges, meadows and steppe where it occurs up to 1,500-1,700 m above sea level. They are a common sight in unimproved grasslands across Europe.\n\nDistribution:\nThis species can be found across most of Europe, southern Russia, Asia Minor and Iran. There is an isolated population in Japan. It is not found in Ireland, North Britain, Scandinavia (except Denmark) and Portugal or Spain. The late twentieth century saw an expansion of its range in the UK (source Wikipedia). \n\nThis Picture is made during a Long Weekend in the South of Belgium in June 2019.

The photo shows orange/yellow cosmos flowers and a butterfly called Argyreus hyperbius / Indian fritillary.\nNative to Mexico, cosmos sulphureus which is commonly called yellow cosmos is now grown all over including North America, Asia and Europe. This annual plant produces daisy-like flowers with flower colors ranging from yellow to orange to scarlet red. Orange cosmos normally blooms in summer and early autumn in Japan with butterflies circling around the flowers.

Melitaea didyma, the spotted fritillary or red-band fritillary, is a Palearctic butterfly of the family Nymphalidae.\nDescription:\nMelitaea didyma is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan reaching 35–50 millimeters The overside of the wings is a bright orange-brown with dark brown markings arranged in rows, which are quite variable in quantity and size. Sometimes the color of the females is a duller orange, shaded with grey-green. The underside of the wings is chequered pale yellow and pale orange. M. didyma has seasonal forms and sexual dimorphism. The male is fiery red, with a narrow dentate black distal border and a moderate number of small black dots and spots, which are dispersed over the basal half of the wing and end with a short band extending beyond the cell from the costa into the disc. On the underside, which is very abundantly marked with small black dots and hooks, a flexuous sub basal band and a curved submarginal one are situated on a delicately greenish, or yellowish, white ground. In the female the forewing and the anal area of the hindwing are much paler, being moreover dusted with blackish, while the costal half of the hindwing has preserved the red tint : the whole wings are much more abundantly but less prominently marked with black. There occur sometimes specimens with a blue gloss on the upper side. \nBiology:\nThis butterfly flies from March to October depending on the location. This species has two or three generations and overwinters as young caterpillar. \nThe larvae feed on various plants, including Linaria, Plantago lanceolata, Veronica, Centaurea jacea and Digitalis purpurea. \nDistribution:\nIt is found in southern and central Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, central Asia and Siberia. It is absent from northern Europe (England, Ireland, northern France, Germany, Poland and Scandinavia). \nHabitat:\nMelitaea didyma prefers flowery and grassy areas, meadows and roadsides (source Wikipedia).
This beautiful and elegant butterfly is a change from a pretty scary caterpillar, it takes a few days to process a caterpillar that was initially so frightening into a beautiful butterfly, that is the power of God that is extraordinary.

Brenthis daphne, the marbled fritillary, is a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae.\nDescription:\nBrenthis daphne has a wingspan of 30–44 millimeters. Wings are rather rounded, the basic color of the upper side of the forewings is bright orange, with an incomplete black marginal band. The underside of the hindwings have a yellowish postdiscal band and the marginal area is completely suffused with purple, with a marble effect (hence the common name). The quadrangular patch on the underside hindwing is partially shaded orange pink to outer side. The chrysalis has two dorsal rows of thorns with bright spots and a bright metallic shine.\nThis species is very similar to the lesser marbled fritillary (Brenthis ino), but the latter is slightly smaller and the coloration of said patch is completely yellow.\nBiology:\nThe butterfly flies from late May to early August depending on the location. The eggs are laid separately in July on the leaves of the host plants. The larvae feed on brambles (Rubus fruticosus), raspberry (Rubus idaeus), Rubus caesius, Rubus sachalinensis, Sanguisorba officinalis and Filipendula species, while adults usually feed on nectar from brambles, thistles and other flowers. This species is univoltine. It overwinters at the caterpillar stage in the egg shell. \nDistribution and habitat:\nThis widespread species is present in the Palearctic ecozone from the southern parts of the continental Europe (northern Spain, southern France, Germany, Italy and eastwards to Slovakia and Greece), up to Caucasus, western Siberia. It prefers warm and sunny forest edges, woodland and bushy areas where the host plants grow, at an elevation of 75–1,750 meters above sea level (source Wikipedia).\n\nThis Picture is made during a Vacation in Bulgaria in May 2018.
