The Colosseum or Coliseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of concrete and sand, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built.

The Colosseum, or Coliseum, in Rome, Italy is always an architectural wonder to behold, but late afternoon sunlight gives it a warm glow. Construction started in 72 A.D. by Vespasian, with modifications added by Titus and Domician, the three Roman Emperors from the Flavian dynasty - hence the structure is also known as the Flavian Amphitheater. Holding up to 80,000 people, the Colosseum was used for gladiator fights, to showcase the Navy with battleships in water, animal hunts, and in later years as apartments. This iconic structure still stands, despite repurposing much of the marble and stone for buildings across Rome. Today it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city.
