Tangara cyanocephala, also known as the Blue-headed Tanager, Collared Tanager, Red-necked Tanager, Blue-headed Tanager (Descourtilz), Collared Tanager (Florianópolis), Little Soldier and Green-throated Tanager (Northeast Region), is a passerine bird of the Thraupidae family.Its scientific name means: from the Tupi Tangará → ata = to walk; and carã = around; (dancer); and from the Latin kuanos = dark blue; and -kephalos, kephalë = with the head, head. ⇒ Dancer with a dark blue head.It measures between 10 and 13 centimeters in length and weighs between 16 and 21 grams.It has a striking bright red band around its neck and a metallic blue crown on top of its head. In females, the red band is more faded, tending towards a cinnamon tone. Body in a uniform shade of green, with a black back and a yellow band over the green wing feathers. Birds from populations in southern Brazil tend to have a body size above the average of 11 centimeters in length.
