The Columbus Circle Monument in New York City honors the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. It’s a 76-foot (23 m) column located at the center of Columbus Circle, near the southwest corner of Central Park. The monument features a marble statue of Columbus atop the column, created by Italian sculptor Gaetano Russo in 1892. This particular monument was erected as a symbol of Italian-American pride during a time when Italian immigrants faced discrimination and sought representation in public spaces.
