Kapalai, a picturesque water-villa resort located off Sabah’s coast in Malaysia, is celebrated for its unique marine ecosystems. Among its underwater treasures is the stunning blue pipe coral, a striking species that adds an ethereal charm to the vibrant coral reefs surrounding this sandbar paradise.\n\nThe blue pipe coral, known for its tubular structure and vivid blue hue, is a type of soft coral found in Kapalai’s shallow and clear waters. Its mesmerizing color is a result of light reflecting off its calcium carbonate skeleton, creating a glowing effect that captivates divers and snorkelers alike. Often growing in clusters, these corals resemble delicate underwater gardens, providing a surreal experience for those exploring the reefs.\n\nThis coral not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of Kapalai’s underwater world but also plays a crucial role in supporting marine life. It offers shelter to a variety of small reef creatures, including gobies, crabs, and juvenile fish, while its presence contributes to the overall health of the reef ecosystem.\n\nDiving among these corals reveals a vibrant marine tapestry, with schools of colorful fish darting through the reef and macro life thriving in every crevice. The tranquility of Kapalai’s waters and its excellent visibility make it an ideal spot for observing these natural wonders.\n\nExperiencing the blue pipe coral in Kapalai is a reminder of the ocean’s unparalleled beauty and a testament to the importance of preserving such delicate ecosystems for future generations.

Giant Barrel Sponge Xestospongia testudinaria occurs widely distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific in a depth range from 2-50m. Specimen in the intertidal zones remain small with 10-20cm diameter, below they can grow to impressing sizes, measuring up to 2.4 meters in height and width. \nThe sponge is covered with several Sea Cucumbers Synaptula lamperti, found in the Western Pacific including the coasts of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Micronesia and the Philippines. The species is very common on coral reefs, both on the exposed and the inner slopes. It is a detrivore that specifically feeds on or around living sponges. \nConsidering the sea cucumbers maximum size of 20cm, the barrel sponge might extend more than 1m from the reef slope. \nBanda Island, Indonesia, 4°30'45.41 S 129°56'7.75 E at 13m depth
