Amami Oshima (Amami Ōshima) is the largest island in the Satsunan island chain that runs between Kyushu and Okinawa and belongs to Kagoshima Prefecture.
Early morning at the edge of the reef near famous Blue Corner. A lot of fish traffic! Humpback Red Snappers and Onespot Snappers dominate the fish life, but there are Drummers, Sweetlips, Butterflyfishes, Damselfishes and Parrotfishes too. Humpback Red Snapper Lutjanus gibbus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean in a depth range from 1-150m, max. length 50cm, common 45cm. Adults mainly inhabit coral reefs, sometimes like these specimens forming large aggregations, which are mostly stationary during the day. It is not easy to approach a school of Humpback Red Snapper Lutjanus gibbus, as this species has a well-spaced escape distance. Onespot Snapper Lutjanus monostigma occurs in the Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Marquesas and Line Islands, north th the Ryukyu Islands, south to Australia, max. length 60cm, common 50cm. Adults inhabit coral reef areas, usually close to shelter in the form of caves, large coral formations or wreckage. The species occurs usually solitary; occasionally in small groups. The sea life at Little Manuk, a so called rocky islet, is very interesting. Bubbles escape through the sand and rocks in places. Apparently there is still some volcanic activity. \nIn the shallow areas there are slopes with black sand and tumbled rocks covered by algal turf and small hard corals, including large rocks with attached table Acropora between four and five metres depth. Hard coralc cover almost 80% and the stress resistance, recovery, and overall reef health and resilience potentials of this coral community are all high.\n\nA school of Common Bluestripe Snappers Lutjanus kasmira and a school of Yellowfin Goatfish Mulloidichthys vanicolensis meet at this beautiful hardcoral reef. \n\nLutjanus kasmira occurs throughout most of the Indo-Pacific region in a depth range from 2-265m, common length 25cm, max. 40cm. In daytime, this species forms nearly stationary schools and feeds individually by night on crustaceans and fishes. \n\nMulloidichthys vanicolensis occurs throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific region in a depth range from 1-113m, common length 25cm, max 39cm. The species feeds on small worms and crustaceans.\n\nLittle Manuk near Tayandu Island, Indonesia \n5°28'6.876 S 132°15'26.808 E at 19m depth
