Hairy Yellow Hermit Aniculus maximus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean from the Indian Ocean across to the Pacific, including Mayotte, La Réunion, Polynesia, Hawaii, Mozambique, the Seychelles, and the south of Japan to the Coral Sea in a depth range from 10 to 150m, max. length 12cm. Unlike some hermit crabs, both claws (chelipeds) are similar in size. The species is omnivorous and opportunistic, feeding on algae, small invertebrates, mollusks, worms, carrion, and other available organic matter. Aniculus maximus is relatively rarely observed compared to smaller reef hermit crabs, likely because much of its range is deeper than typical recreational diving.
