Founded in 1993 following the islands' integration into Australia in 1984—which marked a shift from limited, informal education where most youth entered the workforce directly—the school caters to a small student body of around 80-100 pupils, with 80% speaking English as a second language alongside Cocos Malay or Indonesian; instruction incorporates Bahasa Indonesia as a standard variant of Malay, though Cocos Malay itself was phased out in classrooms. Primary and secondary education is free and compulsory up to age 15, aligning with Australian standards, but higher education opportunities are absent locally, requiring students to relocate to the Australian mainland.
