Ruta graveolens, commonly known as rue, common rue or herb-of-grace, is a species of Ruta grown as a herb. It is native to the Balkan Peninsula, southeastern Europe. It is now grown throughout the world as an ornamental plant in gardens, especially because of its bluish leaves, and also sometimes for its tolerance of hot and dry soil conditions. It also is cultivated as a medicinal herb, as a condiment, and to a lesser extent as an insect repellent.

Evergreen perennial to 1.5m, with vertical or arching biennial stems, leafy throughout at first, then bare, almost woody at the base, densely leafy above, carrying flower heads in the second year. Slender, blue-green, rather downy leaves to 15cm long. Profuse flowers, in large, terminal, cylindrical heads in early spring have petal-like bright yellow-green bracts surrounding the tiny flowers. May be short-lived, but often self-seeds.

Euphorbias are interesting plants because of their obvious symmetry. This has led to the breeding of garden varieties such as this (Euphorbia characias). Euphorbias come in many sizes, and the world's only Euphorbia forest is (allegedly) in Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya. This forest can be seen in the last photo link (below).

Euphorbia cyparissias, or Cypress Spurge, is a perennial herb with erect stems, narrow and needle-like leaves, and yellow, crescent-shaped glands on the rim of its cup-shaped flowers. The flowers appear in spring and early summer, consisting of lime-yellow bracts that slowly fade to red-orange as they mature. It spreads by rhizomes and can be quite invasive.
