La Catrina was created by José Guadalupe Posada in the early 20th century as ‘La Calavera Garbancera’ (The Posh Skull), a critique of the upper class who despised their indigenous origins in order to imitate European fashions. The term ‘catrín’ referred to these well-dressed men, and the figure was popularised and renamed ‘La Catrina’ by muralist Diego Rivera in 1947. Today, she is an icon of the Day of the Dead, a symbol of the acceptance of death and Mexico's cultural richness, beyond social status.
