The Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) is a small migratory sea duck. They are among the smallest of the American ducks. Adult males are mostly white with a black back. Their head is iridescent green and purple with a large white patch behind the eye. Females are grey with a black back and a small white patch behind the eye. Most buffleheads winter in protected coastal water or open inland water. Their breeding habitat is wooded lakes and ponds in the boreal forest of Alaska and Canada. Buffleheads take advantage of their small size by being able to utilize the nesting cavities made by woodpeckers. They are diving ducks that forage underwater for insects, crustaceans and mollusks. This male bufflehead was photographed while swimming in Walnut Canyon Lakes near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

Witness the serene beauty of a Eurasian Coot gracefully swimming and foraging for food in the tranquil waters of the wetland, a harmonious dance of nature's abundance.
The Common Merganser (Mergus merganser) is a large diving duck that lives in rivers, lakes and saltwater in the forested areas of Europe, northern and central Asia, and North America. It has a serrated bill that helps it grip its prey which are mostly fish. In addition, it eats mollusks, crustaceans, worms and larvae. The common merganser builds its nest in tree cavities. The species is a permanent resident where the waters remain open in winter and migrates away from areas where the water freezes. This female common merganser in breeding plumage was photographed while swimming at Walnut Canyon Lakes in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

Mallards are water birds in which females are usually brown, but this female displays a high degree of leucism – it is nearly all white. In leucism, the pigmentation cells that develop from the neural crest are faulty. Similar conditions are (hypopigmentation), where the pigment cells fail only in parts, resulting in a piebald effect; and (albinism). An albino has a lack of only one pigment, melanin. As a result, the melanin layer inside the eye is missing, and albinos have pink 'bloodshot' eyes. The eyes of leucistic animals are pigmented normally, because the melanin within the eyes does not develop from the neural crest. This female is probably the offspring of an all-white mallard female that inhabited this same pond on Wandsworth Common, London.

Two Great Crested Grebes swim in the lake. The great crested grebe, Podiceps cristatus, is a member of the grebe family of water birds.
An Australian wood duck (Chenonetta jubata) glides smoothly across the surface of a tranquil pond, creating gentle ripples that spread outward in the calm water. The duck's distinctive brown and grey plumage contrasts beautifully with the shimmering reflections of the surrounding natural environment. With its beak slightly submerged and webbed feet paddling rhythmically, the wood duck embodies the serenity of its aquatic habitat. This peaceful scene captures the essence of Australia's diverse wetland ecosystems, where the Australian wood duck thrives, adding to the rich tapestry of wildlife in these serene landscapes.
