Although founded in 1535, its permanent stone construction began in 1562 under the direction of architect Antonio García. This Catholic edifice exhibits a complex architectural evolution resulting from centuries of reconstruction following earthquakes; it blends a 16th-century orthogonal plan with Gothic-Mudéjar arches, Baroque altarpieces, and the prominent Neoclassical Arco de Carondelet (c. 1805) which articulates the facade facing the square. The Basilica of the National Vow is a Roman Catholic church located in Quito, Ecuador. Consecreated in 1988, remains unfinished. The building is noted for its grotesques in the form of native animals.

Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador: the façade of the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús in Quito, Ecuador, is a monumental example of the Spanish Baroque style in the Americas. Carved entirely from gray Andean volcanic stone (andesite), the structure was completed in 1765. The design is characterized by its Churrigueresque ornamentation, prominently featuring six massive Solomonic columns (twisted columns) that flank the main portal and central window. The façade is embellished with statues of Jesuit saints, including St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Francis Xavier, set within niches. Located in Quito’s UNESCO-listed Historic Center, this architectural masterpiece reflects the grandeur of the Quiteño School and the influence of the Jesuit order.

Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador: Founded by the Jesuits in 1605 and completed in 1765, the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús stands as a preeminent example of Latin American Baroque. Its interior focal point is the Main Altar, a massive structure carved from cedar and gilded with 23-carat gold leaf. Attributed to the sculptor Jorge de la Cruz, the altarpiece exemplifies the Churrigueresque (Ultra-Baroque) style, distinguished by twisted Solomonic columns and dense vegetative ornamentation. The retable frames polychrome sculptures of Jesuit founders, including St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Francis Xavier, serving as a monumental testament to the sophisticated craftsmanship of the Quiteño School. The Basilica of the National Vow, or of the Consecration of Jesus or Basilica of San Juan, is a neo-Gothic religious building in the historic center of the city of Quito, a center of attraction for devotees and visitors to the city.
