The Great Egret (Ardea alba), also known as the common egret is a large, widely distributed egret, found in Asia, Africa, the Americas, and southern Europe. Distributed across most of the tropical and warmer temperate regions of the world, it builds tree nests in colonies close to water. Like all egrets, it is a member of the heron family. Except for its white color, the great egret is similar in size and appearance to the great blue heron. Like the great blue heron, the great egret feeds in shallow water or drier habitats. Its diet consists of fish, frogs, small mammals, and occasionally small reptiles and insects. It hunts for its prey by slowly stalking and then standing still and allowing the prey to come close.
