The Red Sea is a rich and diverse ecosystem. More than 1200 species of fish have been recorded in the Red Sea, and around 10% of these are found nowhere else. This also includes 42 species of deepwater fish. The rich diversity is in part due to the 2,000 km (1,240 mi) of coral reef extending along its coastline; these fringing reefs are 5000–7000 years old and are largely formed of stony acropora and porites corals. The reefs form platforms and sometimes lagoons along the coast and occasional other features such as cylinders (such as the Blue Hole (Red Sea) at Dahab). These coastal reefs are also visited by pelagic species of Red Sea fish, including some of the 44 species of shark.

Ribboned Sweetlips Plectorhinchus polytaenia occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific from West Coast India to Australia in a depth range from 5-40m on coastal and seaward reefs, max. length 50cm. The species is found singly, in small groups under ledges or large resting aggregations by day, foraging for small invertebrates at night. Adults are found on deep, current-prone slopes with rich invertebrate growth; juveniles on sheltered reefs nearby. \nBluestreak Cleaner Wrasses Labroides dimidiatus usually occur in pairs in the tropical Indo-Pacific in a depth range from 1-40m, usually 1-30m, max. length 14cm. The species creates 'cleaning stations' to which fishes come to have crustacean ectoparasites and mucus removed. Cleaning intensity is not related to client size or commonness. Even hands of divers will be cleaned if presented to the cleaning station! \nThis specimen was encountered in the Triton Bay, Kaimana Regency, West Papua Province, Indonesia, 3°54'50.604 S 134°6'0.828 E at 15m depth.

Panda Butterflyfish Chaetodon adiergastos occurs in the tropical Western Pacific from the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan to the Philippines, Java, Indonesia and northwestern Australia in coral reefs in pairs or groups, usually near soft coral in a depth range from 1-30m, max. length 20cm. The species feeds on corals, crabs, worms, and other invertebrates. Mature individuals form pairs during breeding. \nThere is one intruder in the school: A Raccoon Butterflyfish Chaetodon lunula. \nThere are more fish species to see: some Threespot Dascyllus Dascyllus trimaculatus, an Orangelined Triggerfish Balistapus undulatus, a Lined Bristletooth Ctenochaetus striatus, some young and an adult Moonwrasses Thalassoma lunare, and a lot more like Fusilierfishes, Anthias and Damselfishes. \nThis school of Panda Butterflyfishes was encountered in Tengah Island, Indonesia, 5°8'28.938 S 132°0'57.606 E at 5m depth
