The majestic Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is the national symbol of the United States. It is mostly found in the lowland areas near bodies of water. It feeds mostly on fish including spawned out salmon in rivers as well as water birds, geese, carrion and other prey. Bald eagles are frequent wintertime visitors to Northern Arizona. Bald eagles are large birds of prey with large heads, large bills and large feet. They have white heads and dark brown bodies and weigh between 6 and 14 pounds. Their average wingspan is between 5-7 feet and their average lifespan is between 20-30 years. They can be found near rivers, lakes, reservoirs, marshes , coasts and wildlife refuges. they feed on fish, mammals and waterfowl.
