Old UK Stone Roadside Milestone, with an Original Benchmark, indicating the precise point to which measurements were made. This marker is in Norfolk East Anglia, in the village parish of  Brancaster Staithe, on the road to Kings Lynn.This road was an important route linking the coastal ports and villages and it was used by mail coaches which ran between Cambridge, Ely, King's Lynn and Wells next the SeaThe term benchmark, bench mark, or survey benchmark originates from the chiseled horizontal marks that surveyors made in stone structures, into which an angle iron could be placed to form a bench for a leveling rod, thus ensuring that a leveling rod could be accurately repositioned in the same place in the future. These marks were usually indicated with a chiseled arrow - specifically a broad arrow - below the horizontal line. A benchmark is a type of survey marker.

Bas Relief carved wooden post and sign nameplate for the village of Brancaster Staithe, a village with it's historic roots steeped in fishing. The village is located in the North Norfolk Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). A Staithe is a wharf or landing stage where the returning boats would unload their catch, The spandrels on the sign, have a carving of a whelk. Whelk fishing was a significant local industry for much of the late 19th and a large part of the 20th century. The fisherman would leave Brancaster Staithe for the whelk grounds ten or fifteen miles off shore. Not just whelks, but also crabs, sea urchins made up their catch.
