Pin Cushion Sea Star Culcita novaguineae occurs in tropical Indo-West Pacific in a depth range from 0 to 90m, max. diameter 30 cm. It is very common in lagoon, back reef and reef front. It feeds on detritus and on sessile invertebrates, sometimes including hard corals, but can not be considered a serious threat for the coral reefs.\nThis species has short arms and an inflated appearance and resembles a pentagonal pincushion. The colour is extremely variable: beige, brown, red, yellow, green, with plates and tubercles often in contrasting colour compared with the background. \nThis is a close-up of the underside, of the oral surface near the centre with the mouth. \nLembeh Strait, Indonesia\n1°28'8.917 N 125°14'39.105 E at 23m depth
