Nuuk / Godthåb, Sermersooq, Greenland: a caribou (reindeer) skin is undergoing the traditional air-drying process by being stretched tightly across a wooden frame. After the animal is hunted and skinned, the hide is scraped clean of fat and connective tissue using an ulu (a crescent-shaped knife). It is then laced to the frame to prevent the skin from shrinking or warping as it dries in the open air. The hide visible here displays the characteristic caribou coloration, with a dark brown back and white belly. These skins are highly valued in Greenlandic culture for their superior insulation—due to hollow hair shafts—and are traditionally used to make warm winter parkas (annoraaq), trousers, and sleeping mats.
