Monkey flowers Mimulus guttatus grow in sunlight and in semi-shade (light woodland), and require moist or wet soil. This small specimen is growing within feet of the village pond in Mitcham, Surrey. The flowers have blobs of red along the nectar line, leading into the corolla, similar to the smaller (and more spectacular) blood drop emlets. The foliage is edible, raw or cooked, and has been used to add a slightly bitter flavour to salads. In this way, the leaves have been used as a lettuce substitute. (None of this tested by the photographer.).
