Having been controlled by Romans and Byzantines earlier; it was captured by Seljuq Turks in 1073, by Crusaders in 1101, who gave it back again to the Byzantine and again by Seljuqs in 1227. Fort Gorazda (Tvrđava Goražda) at 452 meters altitude on Goražda Hill overlooking Kotor Bay, is a historic Austro-Hungarian fortification built between 1884-1886 to replace an earlier structure destroyed during the 1869 uprising. Located in Lovćen National Park, it features a distinctive symmetrical three-tiered design with two perpendicular wings constructed from reinforced concrete walls, and notably houses the last surviving 100-ton Gruson rotating turret on its roof, a unique piece of military engineering. Strategically positioned to control the vital Kotor-Cetinje road, the fort served multiple defensive purposes including neutralizing enemy artillery on nearby Krstac mountain and protecting Tivat port during World War I, when Austro-Hungarian forces engaged in artillery duels with Montenegrin batteries positioned on Mount Lovćen. Despite withstanding heavy bombardment from shells up to 24cm in caliber, the fort's robust construction ensured its survival, and it continued serving as a Yugoslav military storage facility until the '90s. It today stands as an abandoned, unprotected ruin accessible free of charge to visitors.
