The Fountain of the Naiads was built in 1870 during the pontificate of Pope Pius IX, a few days before the conquest of Rome by the troops of the Kingdom of Italy and the end of the temporal power of the papacy, by the artists Mario Rutelli e Alessandro Guerrieri. In the centre of Piazza Mincio, in the Quartiere Coppede, stands the delightful Fontana delle Rane (Fountain of the Frogs). The fountain (1924) was designed by the Florentine architect Gino Coppedè (1866-1927) as part of a small, and distinctly quirky, residential quarter that he built between 1915 and 1927.
