Devil Scorpionfish or False Stonefish Scorpaenopsis diabolus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific on rubble or weedy coralline-rock bottoms of reef flats and lagoon and seaward reefs in a depth range from 1-70m, max. length 30cm. \n\nScorpaenopsis diabolus is relatively uncommon. When disturbed, the species flashes its inner pectoral fins. The venomous dorsal sting can inflict a painful injury. The species occurs solitary like this specimen or in pairs and is often partly buried. \n\nThis specimen was encountered in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°28'47.196 N 125°14'12.42 E at 22m depth

Painted Frogfish Antennarius pictus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian and Society islands in a depth range from 0 to 75m, max. length 30cm. The species inhabits shallow sheltered reefs. Adults usually are with sponges, like this specimen, mimicking small sponges or nudibranchs. Marking patterns and colour are highly variable. The different colorations are not due to different specimens or distinct subspecies but are instead phases of the same individual. Over days or weeks, the frogfish adjusts its color to match the substrate, coral, sponges, or other surroundings. \nThe species is an ambush predator, waiting patiently for unsuspecting prey that thinks it is swimming past a sponge. \nThis specimen sits on an Encrusting Sponge Halisarca sp. \nLembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia\n1°28'55.7252 N 125°14'17.2584 E at 24m depth

White froggies, or white frogfishes, are a fascinating and elusive species commonly found around Mabul Island, Malaysia. These small, anglerfish-like creatures are known for their unique, comical appearance, with large, bulbous heads and broad, flattened bodies. Their white color helps them blend seamlessly into their surroundings, often hiding among corals, sponges, or algae. This camouflage, combined with their ability to shift hues, makes them challenging to spot even for experienced divers.\n\nOne of the most intriguing features of white frogfishes is their esca, a specialized lure on their heads. This fleshy appendage mimics the movement of small prey, attracting fish or shrimp within striking distance. Once prey is near, the frogfish ambushes it with incredible speed and precision, despite their slow-moving nature.\n\nMabul Island’s clear waters and vibrant coral reefs provide the perfect habitat for these stealthy predators. They are masters of disguise, often blending into the reef and requiring keen eyes to find. Encountering a white froggie during a dive is a thrilling experience, offering a glimpse into the incredible biodiversity of the island’s marine life. For divers, spotting a white frogfish is a highlight of exploring the underwater world of Mabul, showcasing the unique and often hidden wonders of the ocean.

Commerson's Frogfish or Giant Anglerfish Antennarius commerson occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific and Eastern Pacific in a depth range from 1 to 50m, usually not deeper than 20m, max. length 45cm. \nThis species can be found in a variety of colours including yellow, orange (like this specimen), red, green, brown, and black. It can be found living on coral reefs and in lagoons and often on artificial structures such as wrecks and jetty pylons. \nIt is known to prey on other fish species and on small shrimps using its excellent camouflage to hide from potential prey. The appearance of this fish is designed to conceal that he is a fish, not a sponge. Easier to eat, less probable to be eaten. Not only for predators, often for photographers too: It's in front of your nose, and yet you don't see it!\nLembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia\n1°29'33.414 N 125°15'40.446 E at 20m depth
