Rockley, Christ Church Parish, Barbados: the traveller's palm (Ravenala madagascariensis) is a striking tropical plant native to Madagascar. Despite its name, it is not a true palm but belongs to the bird-of-paradise family (Strelitziaceae). It gets its name because its large, fan-shaped leaves are said to collect rainwater, which travelers could use for hydration. The leaves are arranged in a unique, symmetrical fan-like formation, often growing up to 30 feet tall, making the plant highly ornamental. It thrives in warm, humid environments and prefers well-drained soil with ample sunlight, making it popular in tropical landscapes and botanical gardens.
