The southern gannet in flight is a striking vision of grace and power. With a wingspan that can stretch over six feet, it glides effortlessly above the open sea, riding air currents with barely a beat of its long, narrow wings. Its snowy white plumage gleams in the sunlight, offset by jet-black wingtips that slice cleanly through the sky. From high above, the gannet scans the waves with piercing blue eyes, searching for the shimmer of fish beneath the surface. This is a bird built for flight and the hunt—elegant in the air, lethal in the dive.
