Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA: Old Faithful is a cone geyser located in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, renowned for its relatively predictable eruption pattern that occurs approximately every 90 minutes, though intervals can range from 60 to 110 minutes depending on the duration of the previous eruption. The geyser shoots a column of boiling water to heights averaging 130-140 feet (40-43 meters), with eruptions lasting between 1.5 to 5 minutes and expelling 3,700 to 8,400 gallons (14,000 to 32,000 liters) of water. Named during the 1870 Washburn Expedition for its consistent activity, Old Faithful is powered by underground thermal features where superheated water under pressure periodically flashes to steam, creating the eruption cycle. As one of more than 500 geysers in Yellowstone—which contains over half of the world's geysers—Old Faithful has been erupting in its current pattern for hundreds of years, making it one of the park's most studied and visited thermal features, with its activity carefully monitored and predicted by the National Park Service based on the duration and strength of each eruption.
Old Faithful Geyser is one of the most famous geysers in the world, known for its regular eruptions. It was named in 1870 for its reliability in spewing hot water and steam at intervals of 60 to 110 minutes, reaching heights of 100 to 180 feet. Each eruption lasts about 1.5 to 5 minutes, discharging up to 8,400 gallons of water. Old Faithful is fueled by geothermal activity from the Yellowstone Caldera, a supervolcano, and has erupted more than a million times since the park's founding.
