African Pompano Alectis ciliaris occurs circumglobal in tropical, subtropical and temperate seas in a depth range from 3 to 100m, max. length 150cm. The species has a striking metallic sheen. The dorsal and anal fins are extended by long filaments that can shorten or even disappear with age. This is an adult specimen, already without filaments. The juveniles are drifting offshore and use these appendages to mimic jellyfish, thus reducing the risk of predation. Adults prefer the clear waters of the channels and the outer reef slope, where they move in small groups, like these specimens.
