The Rock of Gibraltar rises magnificently above the urban coastline, framed by the serene Mediterranean waters and clear blue skies, presenting a picturesque and iconic view of this historic landmark in southern Europe.

This species is recognized as the only wild monkey population on the European continent. Approximately 300 individuals inhabit the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory. Although native to the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, this population has existed on the Rock for centuries. They are currently managed by the Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society to ensure their well-being. A well-known legend asserts that British rule in Gibraltar will end if the macaques ever leave the territory.
