A male Great Curassow (Crax rubra) in the lowland forest of Costa Rica. Curassows are members of the New World family Cracidea that includes guans and chachalacas. This bird ranges from eastern Mexico through northern Ecuador but is listed by the IUCN as Vulnerable because of habitat loss and hunting pressure. It is 78–100 cm (31–39 in) in length and 3.1–4.8 kg (6.8–10.6 lb) in weight.

This is a large bird, almost the size of a turkey, from the krax family, which lives in South America and belongs to tropical chicken birds. On the head is a large crest of feathers.

Mutum is a bird from the Atlantic forest in northeastern Brazil that is extinct in the wild, but with some specimens in captivity.

The great curassow (Crax rubra) is a large, pheasant-like bird from the Neotropical rainforests, its range extending from eastern Mexico, through Central America to western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador. Male birds are black with curly crests and yellow beaks; females come in three colour morphs, barred, rufous and black.

The rainforest reserve covers 12,000 hectares, on the southern edge of the Amazon Basin. Cristalino River is connected to other protected areas, thereby forming a huge conservation corridor in the Southern Amazon.
