Hermit crabs are decapod crustaceans belonging to the superfamily Paguroidea. There are over 800 species of hermit crabs, and they can be found in various marine environments. Despite their name, hermit crabs are quite social and often live in groups.

It has been observed using its claws to scrape off algae from rocks and other surfaces. \n\nAs a hermit crab, Dardanus lagopodes constantly looks for suitable shells to upgrade into, as it grows throughout its life, a vital behavior, as the shell acts as its primary defense against predators. \n\nTriton Bay, Indonesia \n3°57'4.944 S 134°8'1.032 E at 16m depth$
