The membrane over the nostrils is feathered to the middle; the tail is about half the length of the wing and is wide and slightly indented.\n\nThe female shares the shape of the beak and the color of the tail with the male. Apart from this, the long black stripe that starts at the base of the beak and ends on the belly, flanked by wide white bands, stands out. The rest of the plumage is light green. Individuals can measure 11 to 12 cm in length.\n\nThe young, like the female, have white-margined feathers on their backs.$

The Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) is a small hummingbird, about 3 inches in length with a long, straight and very slender bill. They use their bills to feed mainly on plant nectar but will also eat small insects. These birds are known for their incredible flight skills. Some will fly 2,000 miles between their breeding ground and their winter home. Not known to rest for very long, this hummingbird was photographed while perched on a branch next to the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

A Violet-fronted Brilliant hummingbird is seen perching on a yellow flower. The violet-fronted brilliant is 11 to 13 cm (4.3 to 5.1 in) long. Males weigh 7.1 to 8.5 g (0.25 to 0.30 oz) and females 6.6 to 7.5 g (0.23 to 0.26 oz). The head crown and throat have iridescent colors. In this photo you can see the iridescent throat of the small colorful hummingbird. There are many water droplets on the yellow flowers.
