Kirtipur, Nepal - February 12, 2024 - A Newari Wedding starts with the ritual of, the groom side sending twelve areca nut in a huge silver bowl along with fruits, sweets, gold jewelry, clothes and other cosmetic accessories for the bride which are decorated and displayed in trays in an eye-catching way. The groom and the groom’s mother is absent in this ceremony whereas the bride’s mother starts the ceremony by worshipping lord Ganesh, lord of fire(Agni devta) and other god and goddesses. This ritual is usually performed four days before the wedding on the same day as the bride side’s reception party.

MATHURA, UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA - 2024/03/18: Women seen beating male devotees as per the ritual with sticks during the Lathmar Holi celebration. The Lathmar Holi festival is based on a Hindu legend, according to which Lord Krishna traveled from his home village of Nandgaon to Barsana to tease his lover Radha. Radha and her entourage took offense at his advances and drove Krishna out of the village. Today the legend is celebrated at the Radha Rani temple in Barsana. Each year, men from Nandgaon travel to Barsana, where they are greeted by women wielding lathis (sticks). The festivities last for over a week in which participants throw colored powders and liquids at each other and drink copious amounts of a traditional brew called Thandai.
