This is a compact evergreen perennial which grows in low clumps and sends up long stems that support globes of bright pink flowers. In some cases purple, white or red flowers also occur. Pollination is by various insects including bees.

A tiny purple sea urchin rests on a glossy, wet rock along a rocky shoreline. Sunlight highlights textures and contrasts, conveying isolation, calm, and the rugged beauty of coastal geology.

Rocky coastline in a fjord in Western Norway at Golten (or Golta) in Sund municipality (near the city of Bergen) in Vestland (previously Hordaland county) on a sunny day with puffy cumulus clouds in summer (late July). The ground consists of foliated rock of gneiss (a coarse-grained metamorphic rock that forms under intense heat and pressure) and granite (coarse-grained (phaneritic) intrusive igneous rock) formation with cracks, slits, crevices and clefts. The landscape is dominated by heather moorland. The image was captures with a full frame DSLR camera and a sharp 35mm f/2.0 prime wide angle lens at low ISO resulting in large clean image files. Shallow depth of field. Ample copy space. The image is part of a series of photographs of rocky coastlines in Norwegian fjords.
