Vatican, November 07 -- Some nuns come out from an access door of the Vatican State, on the left side of St. Peter's Basilica, in the historic heart of Rome, manned by a Swiss Guard in its sentry box. Nuns and guards wear medical masks due to measures against Covid-19 pandemic. The Pontifical Swiss Guard is an armed body in the service of the Pope created in 1506 under the pontificate of Julius II, composed of about 130 military elements all of Swiss nationality. According to legend, the icon and distinctive blue and yellow uniform of the Swiss Guards was designed by Michelangelo, while it was designed by commander Jules Repond at the beginning of the 20th century. With its five centuries of history, the Pontifical Swiss Guard is the oldest military guard in the world still in service. Image in high definition format.

The Pontifical Swiss Guard, also known simply as the Swiss Guard (in Latin: Custodes Helvetici; in Italian: Guardia Svizzera), is a military corps in charge of the security of the pope and the Holy See. Another corps of guards of Swiss origin was also in charge of the security of the Palace of Versailles (France) during the reign of Louis XVI. The ceremonial chief of the Swiss Guard is the pope, sovereign of Vatican City. It is currently the smallest professional army in the world; it currently has 135 soldiers.

Rome, Italy, 12 January -- The changing of the guard of honor in the main door of the Palazzo del Quirinale (Quirinal Palace), in the historic heart of Rome. The changing of the guard takes place every hour, carried out by all the Italian military corps. In the photo the Lancers of Montebello of the Italian Army. The Quirinal Palace is currently the official seat of the President of the Italian Republic, elected every seven years by the Parliament. Built in Neo-classical style on the Quirinal hill between 1583 and 1583 as the residence of Pope Gregory XIII, over the centuries this palace has been the papal residence (1605-1870), the residence of the King of Italy (1871-1946) and the official seat of the Presidency of the Republic (from 1946 to today). Some of the most important Italian architects and artists participated in its construction and decoration, including Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Carlo Maderno, Guido Reni and Domenico Fontana. The Quirinale, with an extension of 110 thousand square meters, is the sixth largest building in the world. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
