Whittier was built during World War II as a military camp. Today it became a port of call for cruise ships and a gateway for Alaska tourism activities.

Miquelon town, Miquelon Island, Saint Pierre et Miquelon: the fishing industry on Miquelon Island, part of the French overseas collectivity of Saint‑Pierre and Miquelon, remains the backbone of the local economy. Traditional fisheries—particularly cod, crab, and lobster—have long supported the community, though stocks and quotas are tightly regulated under French and Canadian agreements. Most fishing is small‐scale and seasonally based, with vessels often licensed to operate under the territorial fishing regime. The catch is generally sold to processors in Saint‑Pierre or exported to mainland France via licensed channels. While the sector has declined from its mid‑20th‑century peaks due to diminished fish stocks and shifting fishing regulations, it still provides employment for a significant portion of the island’s population and underpins ancillary services such as boat maintenance, gear supply, and local transportation. The territory continues to seek diversification—developing tourism and small‑scale agriculture—but fishing remains central to Miquelon’s cultural identity and economic resilience.

$Saint Pierre, Saint Pierre Island, Saint Pierre et Miquelon: the fishing industry of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, once the cornerstone of the archipelago's economy, has undergone a dramatic transformation following the collapse of cod stocks. For centuries, the islands served as a crucial base for French fishermen, particularly for Atlantic cod. However, the 1992 Canadian moratorium on cod fishing, a measure taken in response to severe overfishing, had a devastating and lasting impact on the local economy, which was almost entirely dependent on this single industry. This led to a significant economic downturn and a fundamental shift towards a service-based economy, largely supported by public administration and financial transfers from mainland France. Today, the fishing industry operates on a much smaller and highly regulated scale, governed by strict quotas negotiated with Canada. While cod fishing exists at minimal levels, the contemporary fishing sector has diversified to include species such as crab and Atlantic salmon, with both professional and recreational components. Despite these adaptations, the industry's contribution to the local GDP remains a fraction of its historical peak.$
