Aerial view of the Obelisk on Killiney Hill in Wicklow-Ireland, Killiney Obelisk, popular tourist destinations in ireland, people enjoy the view next to the monument on the hill, view hill, The woman watching the view on the pyramids\n\nThe Killiney Obelisk was built in 1742 to commemorate what is described as ‘the Year of the Slaughter’ or Ireland’s forgotten famine. In 1740 there was an incredibly cold winter which was followed by a severe summer of rain and floods. This wiped out the crops and killed off livestock. The following winter was again BALTIC with temperatures not getting above minus 10 for a month. It was so cold that small vessels were destroyed by icebergs on the River Liffey, street lamps could not be lit plunging towns and villages into darkness and food riots were common throughout the land. Many of the oldest trees were also felled for fuel and sickness was common all over. Reports suggest that up to 480,000 may have people died during this forgotten famine. A small number of rich landlords like John Malpas of Killiney Hill and Kathryn Connolly of Castletown House commissioned famine relief projects like this one to provide employment to destitute families. Ironically this monument now overlooks the wealthiest part of Ireland.
Certainly! The Virgin Mary statues along the roads in Ireland are physical representations of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, in various artistic forms. These statues can take different shapes, sizes, and materials, ranging from stone sculptures to ceramic or bronze figures.\n\nThe statues typically depict the Virgin Mary in a serene and gentle manner, often with her arms outstretched or holding the infant Jesus. Her facial expression conveys a sense of peace, compassion, and maternal love. Some statues include symbolic elements such as a halo, a rosary, or a crown, highlighting her divine status.\n\nThese statues are often found at significant locations along the roadsides, such as crossroads, scenic viewpoints, or near places of pilgrimage. They are placed with care and reverence by local communities, religious organizations, or individuals as a way to honor the Virgin Mary and provide a focal point for prayer, reflection, and spiritual connection.

The ancient statue is inside the walled cemetery on Slane Hill and there are wild flowers growing on top of the wall. As far as I can gather, the monument to St. Patrick was made by a long-dead local sculptor many years ago.

Grave outside what is thought to be a 17th century church on Achill, the biggest of Ireland's islands. Two earlier churches stood at the site, one built by the 16th century 'Pirate Queen' Gráinne Mhaol (Grace O'Malley) and one dating to the 7th century and built by St. Dymphna. Buried in the adjacent graveyards are local victims of Ireland's Great Hunger, or famine, in the mid-1800s and dozens who perished in boating and fire tragedies.

A statue of Jesus on a mountain is a powerful and iconic symbol that can be found in various parts of the world. This striking image often evokes a sense of spirituality, awe, and contemplation.\n\nPerched on the summit of a towering mountain, the statue of Jesus stands tall and imposing, its outstretched arms and serene countenance offering a sense of comfort and guidance to those who behold it. It is often crafted with meticulous attention to detail, with the face and hands reflecting a sense of peace and compassion. The statue's placement on the mountain peak makes it seem as though it is watching over the land below, symbolizing protection and divine presence.\n\nThe mountain itself adds to the mystique of the scene. Its rugged terrain and breathtaking vistas create a sense of isolation and solitude, making the statue of Jesus appear even more profound in its significance. Visitors often undertake a journey to reach this mountaintop, whether through hiking, climbing, or driving, adding a sense of pilgrimage to the experience.
