During the time of the first shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, in the Edo Period, the Nijo Castle was built, only to be completed 23 years later by the grandson of the firs shogun. This 275000 square meters houses gardens, ruins of palaces, and concentric fortifications; all amounting to Nijo castle being one of the the best surviving examples of Japanese architecture, and known worldwide as one of the few Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto from UNESCO.

It is characterized by the usage of karahafu, an undulating bargeboard peculiar to Japan.
