Béhuard is a French island village in the middle of the River Loire, in the department of Maine-et-Loire in the Pays de la Loire region near Angers. The island of Béhuard, formed by a lava flow about 400 million years ago. has a mere 120 residents residing in the village of Béhuard which is a UNESCO World Heritage site It is on a raised lava rocky outcrop on which the chapel, Notre-Dame Chapel was built. Béhaurd has a fascinating history from the 15th century when King Louis XI capsized when sailing on the Loire, causing him to pray to the Virgin Mary to save him - and he was washed ashore. The King then ordered a chapel to be built dedicated to the Virgin Mary in thanks for saving his life - the Notre Dame de Béhuard Chapel. The chapel on it's rocky outcrop is constantly threatened by floodwater from the River Loire, but it's raised position helps it avoid the flooding threat. The village is surrounded by the vineyards of Savennières and Rochefort-sur-Loire
