Cairns, stone piles traditionally used as trail markers, especially in mountainous regions like the Alps, Pyrenees, and Scottish Highlands. Built by hikers for navigation, they help guide others through fog, snow, or unmarked trails. Today, many tourists build them recreationally, but this trend is discouraged by conservationists—unauthorized cairns can damage fragile alpine ecosystems, disturb wildlife, and mislead hikers. Though historic cairns are part of Europe’s cultural heritage, it's best to enjoy them without adding new ones.
