The Santuari de Lluc is a monastery and pilgrimage site located in the municipality of Escorca in north-west Majorca. It is located in a basin on a height of 525 metres and is surrounded by a number of high mountains such as the Puig de Massanella. The sanctuary was founded in the 13th century after a Moorish shepherd found a statue of the Virgin Mary on the site where the monastery was later erected. As it is located centrally in the Serra de Tramuntana the monastery is often used as a starting point for walking-tours.

This sanctuary of the Virgin Mary lies 330 meters above sea level, the construction of which began in 1348 to protect against the plague epidemic that swept across Europe, came to Mallorca that year and killed 20 percent of the population. The monastery that stands today on this hill, from which there is a beautiful view of the Bay of Pollença and Alcudia, and the Sierra Tramuntana and Albufera de Pollença have undergone fundamental changes since their origins. The original chapel, the construction of which was completed in 1355, became a monastery in 1371, to which walls and a defense tower were added years later. In 1564 the closure of the monastery was ordered, which would not reopen its doors until 1638.
