The European hare (Lepus europaeus), also known as the brown hare, is a species of hare native to Europe and parts ofWestern Asia and Central Asia. It is a mammal adapted to temperate, open country. It is related to and looks very similar to theEuropean rabbit, which is in the same family but in a different genus. Hares are larger than the European rabbit, have longer ears and hind legs and breed on the ground rather than in a burrow. They rely on speed to escape from predators.

The Grey Francolin, Francolinus pondicerianus, also previously referred to as the Grey Partridge (but not the European Grey Partridge), is a species of Francolin native to the plains and more arid parts of South Asia - but was also introduced into the tropical Indian Ocean island of Mauritius around the middle of the 18th century as a gamebird. A pair are seen here foraging on grassland in the west coast of Mauritius near Black River. Males measure about 34 centimetres and females about 30 centimetres. Both have brown plumage which is barred over their full length. They live primarily on the ground, as they are weak flyers, and will only fly a short distance if necessary to do so. They forage on bare and low grassland, feeding on seeds, grain, insects and termites and beetles. Good copy space.
