A ball and stick model of a metal-organic framework, or MOF. A large, very porous, crystalline compound. MOFs have an extremely large surface area because of their open structure, onto which some gasses will readily adsorb. For example, a container filled with MOF can actually store much more hydrogen gas than the same empty container. This is a very significant issue for storage of hydrogen if it is to be taken up as a fuel to replace petroleum products, and also for the storage of carbon dioxide in carbon-capture technologies.
